Welcome to The Wenatchee World's literacy program.
What is NIE?
The Newspaper in Education program encourages the use of newspapers in the classroom to promote literacy and to help teach the state essential learning goals. Newspapers bring the real world to the classroom by teaching lifelong learning skills. Click here to watch a video about the NIE program (requires Quicktime).
How does NIE work?
Newspaper in Education builds a partnership between local businesses and North Central Washington educators. Your generous donation is equally matched by The Wenatchee World and allows teachers to order as many papers as they need to use in their classroom. - at no cost to them or to their schools. This past year, over 120,000 newspapers were delivered to 140 classrooms throughout Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan and Grant counties. Newspapers can be used to help teach nearly all core subjects in grades K-12, Special Education, Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language. Participating teachers may choose from over 25 curriculum guides and educational tabs or attend workshops-again at no cost-to help them incorporate the newspaper into their everyday classroom curriculum. Literacy is also promoted through children's serial stories and the 'Kid Scoop' page, both of which appear weekly in the newspaper. |
